Celebrating 50 Years of El Concilio Family Services in Oxnard

I had the honor of attending El Concilio de Oxnard’s 50th anniversary celebration, a truly special milestone for an organization that has been a cornerstone in our community for decades.

Growing up in Oxnard, I remember hearing stories and radio commercials about families who would go to El Concilio for help with their immigration paperwork, citizenship applications, and community resources. It was the place people turned to when they needed guidance, support, and someone who understood their struggles. For so many in Ventura County, El Concilio has represented hope, opportunity, and a pathway to a better life.

Beyond its vital services, El Concilio has also spent years uplifting and recognizing Latino leaders, individuals whose dedication and heart continue to move our community forward.

One of this year’s honorees was my dear friend Velia Soto, whom I met back in my Oxnard College days. We shared unforgettable experiences together in student government and even traveled to Washington D.C. as young leaders full of hope and ambition. I always knew Velia would go on to do something impactful, and she absolutely has. She has a law degree but she’s taken on one of the most challenging yet meaningful career paths: teaching, caring for, and advocating on behalf of students with special needs. Velia is a bright light as a special education teacher at Pacifica High School, and I couldn’t be prouder to see her recognized for her incredible work and dedication.

It was also an honor to represent the Ventura County Democratic Party at such a meaningful event, celebrating an organization that continues to embody the values of service, empowerment, and community.

Fifty years stron! Here’s to El Concilio de Oxnard, to its legacy of advocacy, and to the people like Velia who continue to make our county a more compassionate and connected place.
